Turks & Caicos A Paradise Dream Destination
Dream Destination: Turks and Caicos on a Budget
Imagine. The epitome of paradise.
An endless awe of white beaches and turquoise waters you can’t describe and only the Caribbean can offer. Now visualize yourself on a boat gliding over the vast spectrum of blues that connect to the horizon with no end in sight.
The Caribbean is paradise.
This was my experience in Turks & Caicos, a group of forty low-lying coral islands just south of the Bahamas. I spent most of my time on the most popular island, Providenciales (or “Provo,” as locals call it). This British Overseas Territory is a watersports lover’s dream and a tropical beach lover’s happy place. I was lucky to explore boating, dining, shipwrecks, biking, shopping, beaches, and lounging by the pool.
I’ve added a photo gallery at the end of the blog for inspiration and a sweet oasis of Caribbean blues.
If you follow my blog, you know I’m all about budget-friendly travel. Turks can be pricey, but thanks to friends with a house on Provo, I could explore these tropics without stress.
My girlfriends and I went over Mother’s Day weekend, leaving my kids home. As much as I missed them, I got so caught up in the magic of the islands that I almost forgot to buy them a souvenir! Thankfully, a tiny gift shop at the airport saved the day.
Let me give you a taste of the islands with some phone snaps and 10 legitimate reasons to add Turks & Caicos to your travel bucket list. Get your bathing suit packed and let’s dive in!
1. Grace Bay Beach: White Sands and Turquoise Waters
The girls and I decided to check out the hype of Grace Bay Beach after getting a coffee at Lemons 2 Go, a popular spot for locals for coffee, smoothies, and juices. And yes, it hit the spot. Definitely recommend it.
We hopped on our bikes after our coffee and made our way to the world-famous beach that has many designations and accolades. It’s arguably one of the best in the world, with white sandy beaches, warm Caribbean waters, and luxury resorts lining the coastline with top-rated restaurants and water sports.
If our schedule wasn’t packed we would’ve rented some beach chairs for the day. We did end up going back on our last day to enjoy a pina colada from the swim up pool bar at a resort. Grace Bay Beach is perfect for both relaxation and adventure, making it an essential stop for anyone visiting Provo.
2. La Famille Express Shipwreck: Adventure Awaits
La Famille Express Shipwreck is a historical landmark off Providenciales, accessible by boat, jet ski, or kayak. Our host for the weekend insisted we experience it on one of our boat outings. As we approached, it gave major Jack Sparrow “Pirates of the Caribbean” vibes.
I couldn’t wait to check it out with the others who had abandoned their watercrafts to climb up the rusty ship and jump off. I dove off our boat into the water, underestimating how far of a swim it would be to get to the shipwreck.
Instead of attempting the longest swim of my life (which isn’t that far), I opted to stay close to our boat and float on my back, watching people climb up the ship. I learned the waters near the shipwreck are as shallow as seven feet deep.
3. Snorkeling at Smith Reef Beach
Smith Reef Beach is a beach walk from Grace Bay Beach, near Turtle Cove in Providenciales. One of the highlights is that you can snorkel right from the shore, no boat required.
It offers free beach access, so there are no fees to snorkel. The reef is home to colorful tropical fish like parrotfish, angelfish, and butterflyfish. You might even spot stingrays, sea turtles, lobsters, eels, and crabs.
Even if you’re a beginner, Smith Reef is perfect for newbies to intermediate snorkelers, making it a must-visit activity while in Turks.
4. Sunrises & Sunsets: A Moment of Magic
Waking up before dawn may be a norm for many of you, but for me it’s effort. I choose not to be part of the 5 am club for my own sanity. I’m between a bear and night owl when it comes to ceasing my day, so there’s got to be a good reason to rise so early.
My curiosity of what a sunrise was like in the Northern Caribbean was enough to get me out of bed. I threw on a strappy sundress and flipflops and crossed the street to the beach access trail with with no one else awake yet.
The soft white sand was cool from the night as my toes became the first of the day to leave footprints. I walked, searching for the best spot to sit. The beach was empty — just me, just as I imagined it would be. I sat down crisscrossing my legs and took a deep breath of fresh Caribbean morning air. It was May, so the weather held a steady warmth throughout the night.
I stared at a few boats anchored in front of me, wondering what their story was. The sailboats intrigued me the most. Where did they sail from? Do they just sail the Caribbean from island to island, country to country year-round?
Between my thoughts and imaginings, the sun rose. It wasn’t a dramatic sunrise like the stories I was making up in my head about the characters who sail the boats in front of me, but its subtlety made it even more magnificent. It was a gentle sunrise, and I’m glad I witnessed it.
Now the sunsets are more my preference simply because of the time of day they take place. The most magical one I saw was again at the same beach, this time I was walking with my friend, we turned a corner and stumbled into the most beautiful sunset. We ran into the ocean, jumping and splashing with gratitude and happiness. It was a picture-book moment come to life. So we jumped, laughed and played like giggly girls.
5. Dining with Ocean Views
Turks and Caicos offers many restaurants with amazing settings, from fine dining to authentic Caribbean flavors and fresh seafood.
One of my favorite experiences was dinner at Vita at the Rock House, a cliff-side restaurant mixing Mediterranean and Italian cuisine. The view of the Caribbean reminded me of a Mediterranean terrace and the food was delish.
Grace Bay’s beach resorts also offer upscale and casual restaurants lining the shore, perfect for sipping a cocktail while soaking in the view. I overheard the locals talking about the Ritz-Carlton bar being a great spot to grab a drink. Coco Bistro is a local favorite for fine dining with Caribbean-inspired gourmet cuisine.
6. The Caribbean Sea: Crystal Clear and Inviting
Have you ever been to the Caribbean on a cruise or vacation to an island country? It’s like no other, with turquoise waters so clear you can see for what seems like miles.
There are so many species of colorful sea creatures and fish, and the warm, gentle waters are present year-round, making it one of the most famous bodies of water in the world.
The aquamarine waters are always alive with vibrant Caribbean culture, music, and cuisine. It’s the kind of island life many dream of living. My first trip to the Caribbean as a teenager changed my perspective of life for the better. It has that effect.
7. Beaches: Paradise on Every Shore
Yes, the beaches themselves are a destination. We explored several, and they all shared the same soft white sand and pristine shoreline I never wanted to leave.
Whether you want romance, relaxation, or playfulness, the beaches cater to every traveler. Even if you did nothing else but walk or lounge along the sand, you’d be in tropical bliss. They are lined with resorts, beach chairs and water activities for every type of tropical vacationer.

8. Boating: Explore the Islands by Water
Boating is a key part of any Turks & Caicos trip. Locals and vacationers hop between small cays, sandbars, and islands on catamarans, sail boats, fishing boats, and scuba diving boats.
Catamarans are popular for sunset cruises, while fishing boats are known for catching tuna, mahi-mahi, marlin, and wahoo. I highly recommend touring the islands by boat. Maybe not all 40 of them, but getting out on the water is a must to experience the beauty of Turks.
During our stay, we went boating several times to the shipwreck, the disappearing sandbar, Iguana Island, and a famous floating bar where Drake has been spotted. Each trip revealed a new side of the islands.
9. Watersports: Fun on the Water
From windsurfing, jet skiing, and snorkeling to clear-bottom kayaking, there are endless water activities. Jet skis, paddleboards, and kayaks give you access to shipwrecks, sandbars, reef edges, and hidden beaches.
We picked up our friend from a well-known kitesurfing beach on Provo, where the wind is perfect for the sport, and watched dozens of kitesurfers glide across the waves. The islands are surrounded by some of the clearest, calmest, and warmest waters in the world, perfect for almost any water activity.
10. Iguana Island: Playful and Unique
Little Water Cay, also known as Iguana Island, is a private island home to around 5,000 iguanas. Yes, we saw a large iguana on the beach that wanted nothing to do with us! I was unsuccessful at getting a picture of it, but it was one of the oldest looking iguanas I’ve seen. That says something since I live in Florida.
It’s a good location for privacy and photoshoots. The landscape and seascape do all the work. We even did a little shoreline photoshoot for fun, feeling like Sports Illustrated models in paradise (that’s a stretch, ha).
